News and Commentary from one of Torrance’s leading therapists.
“Cured” is a documentary detailing the events that led up to the significant change in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders in 1980 that no longer classified gay and lesbians as “mentally ill.”
On the film’s website, they describe the film as “a fascinating documentary about doctors who took too long to heal themselves.” Changing the stigmatization attached to being gay and lesbian took a lot of work – and courage – and the film depicts the significant course of events leading up to it.
Dr. Chris Regan, Psy.D. says there is still work to be done, though. Some of his patients still struggle with their families wanting to “fix” them – thinking that their sexual preference is something that can be “treated” and “cured.”
Do you still see a stigma of mental illness attached to being gay or lesbian? If so, what can you do to help relieve it?
The documentary is set to air on PBS Oct 11th. You can go to https://www.cureddocumentary.com for more information.
